WHAT IS THE FARGO-MOORHEAD AREA FOUNDATION?

The Fargo-Moorhead Area Foundation (FMAF) is a local nonprofit entity that attracts donations of all sizes from multiple donors to create a collection of funds that will exist into perpetuity. Contributions are tax deductible and are “pooled” in a coordinated investment process aimed at safely maximizing earnings. That income is then used to make grants to charitable organizations and institutions that serve Cass County (ND) and Clay County (MN). Founded in 1960 and now one of more than 700 such community foundations in the United States, the FMAF manages more than 200 funds valued at more than $47 million. In the last 10 years the Foundation has distributed nearly $17 million in  scholarships and grants supporting youth, health, human services, education, artsand civic programs.

The Fargo-Moorhead Area Foundation makes sure it takes care of the administrative back-office work so donors can focus on what truly matters – making an impact with their charitable gifts. Foundation support includes IRS tax reporting to ensure compliance, due diligence on nonprofit organizations to ensure fiscal responsibility, board and volunteer engagement, diverse funding resources, etc. management of grant-making processes from solicitation to evaluation, regular statements providing an update on spending and earnings on a donor’s fund, confirmation of all gifts received and grants made, and an annual report listing all grants made. The professional staff is always ready to assist the WMSTR Endowment Fund committee when a need arises.
